GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free software for image editing which is as powerful as Adobe Photoshop. Till now GIMP used to come as a default software with Ubuntu – one of the most successful and best Linux distribution, but now it has been decided to exclude GIMP from the default software bundle on Ubuntu.

bye-bye-gimp

Ubuntu team has outlined the following reasons for this exclusion,

1. Consuming so much of disk space for normal desktop users who don’t use GIMP like powerful tool on daily basis

2. Too complex user interface

3. Since this is an application for professional photographers or designers, so no need to provide in a default software bundle

4. Since Windows doesn’t carry any powerful image editing software as default, so no need to provide that bulky software in Ubuntu as well

Reasons outlined above seems valid because normal users browse Internet, take screenshots, use Open Office for documentations etc. If you are a professional then you can install GIMP at any point of time on your Ubuntu OS.

Important Note: Windows users can download GIMP for their PC from below link:

What If GIMP doesn’t come as default in Ubuntu

GIMP Pro users don’t have to worry about the exclusion of GIMP from Ubuntu because they can install this nice platform at any point of time. It is available for download and install on your Ubuntu OS by following the below mentioned path,

Ubuntu or Debian users can simply run apt-get install gimp to get the latest stable release of GIMP.

So go to the terminal and type “apt-get install gimp “ (without quote) to install GIMP on your Ubuntu or Debian distribution of Linux.

Has any alternative product is bundled with it? Personally I don’t think GIMP occupies more disk space. GIMP is a very powerful image editor., Ubuntu is losing something. They got to include GIMP.

I think this is the right choice. I feel many new users who move to Linux from Windows will surely be looking for an alternative to photoshop and GIMP is the best choice.
