Are you spending so much time on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut etc. or keep checking emails on Gmail at an interval of just few minutes? Is that thing hampering your other task’s completions? Then now you must take some action to control your visits to these sites or you will be addicted. Self control is one way to get rid of this issue but whenever you get some time, you will just open these sites to check recent updates from friends and family and after few minutes, you realize that you should not have open that site as other tasks are still pending.
If this is the case, then I would suggest you to try a simple web app named “KeepMeOut” (KMO) which will warn you if you are opening these site within set time window. For example, if you are opening Facebook.com for 2’nd time in last 60 minute, it will warn and suggest you to wait for next few minutes and then open the same as you already did that in last 60 minutes time only. This way you can keep an eye on your Facebook addiction and control that by increasing the time frame in next few days.
This we application helps in taking control on sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, YouTube, Gmail, Google etc. I created a short screencast to show the steps for Facebook and Twitter.
Steps to keep control on Facebook, Twitter, Gmail time spent
[ad id=’7′ style=’float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0′]- Enter the web address of any of these sites on this page and also enter the time in minutes. This is the time window in which KMO will not let you open that site for 2’nd time.
– Drag and Drop the new link created by KMO on browser’s bookmark bar
– You may rename that bookmark link to give that a proper name. For example, I renamed Facebook link of KMO to “KMO-Facebook”
– Now whenever you want to open facebook.com, open that from the KMO link saved on bookmark bar / manager. If you clicked on that link in the set timeframe, then warning message will appear saying that try the link after certain time period.
Note: If you still want to open facebook.com even in that time frame, you may type that address “facebook.com” directly in the browser and open the same. This is true for other sites as well. But to keep yourself stick to your resolution of not opening these sites in particular timeframe, then open through the link saved in bookmark manager / bar of browser.
Here is the video screencast of the process of KMO,
