Social networking giant Facebook is blocked in Pakistan because of some online competition to draw the Prophet Mohammad. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) directed Internet Service providers in Pakistan to block Facebook from today to indefinite time.
After the order from PTA, Lahore High Court ordered temporarily banning Facebook in Pakistan after the country’s media reported that the competition would be held on May 20.
Azhar Siddique, a representative of the Islamic Lawyers Forum who filed a petition in the Lahore High Court said,
The court has ordered the government to immediately block Facebook until May 31 because of this blasphemous competition.
From late afternoon, Facebook was unavailable for Internet users in Pakistan. If web represents open culture then this kind of competition will run on every minute on different sites and government can’t block every site. Anyway, hope to get this resolved soon and people is Pakistan may access Facebook after certain time period.
